We made a Giant Tiki Head

We were having a party recently and decided to make a giant papier mache tiki head for it. As you do.

Here are the results – meet Imhotep, he’s about 4 feet tall. First was to create the shape mostly out of cardboard and masking tape. Then we did about 2 or 3 layers of papier mache (newspaper and wallpaper paste). Then we did one layer of brown paper to give it an even colouring – I think we could have left it at this point as it looked pretty cool, but we wanted it to look more like a stone texture, so did a rough coat of white emulsion, then ‘mottled’ it with sponges and grey/black/white paint to give it the finished appearance. Now, where shall we keep it….?
